An Apple a Day


"An apple a day keeps the doctor away". Sure, we've all heard it, but what makes it true? According to a recent study, apples and applesauce have been linked to lung and breast cancer prevention. The flavoniods in apples stop the growth of breast cancer cells and "alter" one of the catalysts that increase the spread of breast cancer. Apples have also been linked to better overall lung health, and the antioxidant quercetin helps to prevent lung cancer.

Apples and applesauce also reduce your risk for hypertension, obesity, heart disease, and metabolic syndrome. Apples contain vitamin C, fiber, and pectin, which helps to curb the appetite and promote weight loss or maintenance.
TIP: When you purchase applesauce, try to find ones without a lot of added sugar. Also, when you are cooking this fall, try substituting applesauce for vegetable oil. I made a batch of pumpkin squares (see my pumpkin blog for more health benefits) and used cinnamon flavored applesauce instead of oil. Not only did it make the squares moist and flavorful, but it added to the health benefits and cut back on fat.

  1. It's interesting to know that apples can help prevent lung and breast cancer. I used to eat cinnamon flavored applesauce like it was going out of style when I was younger so maybe I'll start getting back into that! I've also heard that apples are 10 times more effective at making you wake up in the morning than coffee is.

  2. I have always enjoyed apples and applesauce, but I never really knew how good they really are. I would have never suspected that they would help prevent lung and breast cancer. I also think replacing vegetable oil with applesauce is a great idea. I was a bit skeptical at first, but really you can't even taste the difference!

  3. You make a good point when you said to find apple sauce without added sugar. A serving of Mott's no sugar added apple sauce has 11 grams of sugar whereas the regular has 23 grams of sugar. That is such a difference in a small one cup serving. From personal experience, there isn't really even a difference in taste either! One cup also has less sugar than one cup of juice (11 g vs. 28 g) The no-sugar added applesauce is definitely the way to go for when I'm hopefully teaching next semester!

  4. I love both apples and applesauce, so reading this and knowing that I am benefiting greatly from eating them is excellent. At my house we use applesauce in many of the foods that we bake and you can't even taste the difference. It's delicious. Great post!

  5. I knew there was something real about that statement. I have heard something like it before but it is great to know the real facts about it. It is such a great thing too because apples are tasty and people enjoy eating them and cooking with them, especially this time of year. If apples or applesauce alone is getting too repetitive you can try making apple crisp, caramel or peanut butter dip or even brown sugar with granola. It is still an apple no matter what you do with it!

  6. I'm glad I like apples and its good to know that it helps prevent cancer which as we know is the leading killer of all cancers. I guess I'll be switching from bananas to apple in the morning now.

  7. I eat apples all the time but I am not a huge fan of applesauce. This is a good post and provides me with a lot of information about apples that I didn’t know. The more interesting fact you talked about is how apples stop the growth of breast cancer cells. Seeing that breast cancer is so common in women these days you would think doctors would provide this information to his/her female patents. Great post Kate!

  8. I love apples, and I used to eat them as often as I could. However, within the last year or two I have mysteriously developed a new allergy to them. I cannot eat raw apples without my mouth getting incredibly itchy, and my throat closing a little bit. Kinda scary. I hate it because I love apples, especially knowing how good they are for you!
